About Him
Martin Scorsese was born 17 November, 1942, in New York City. He grew up an asthmatic youngster in Little Italy, and spent a great deal of time in movie theatres. Believing he was destined for priesthood, he went to study at Cathedral College, but dropped out after a year and entered New York University, where he obtained his masters degree in film. In fact, many of his movies throughout his career reflect his Italian-American Catholic upbringing. Starting in 1963, he made several well-received shorts, including Who's That Knocking at my Door, starring a young Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro. Scorsese went on to make Mean Streets with these same two stars in 1973, and then in 1976, Taxi Driver. His further successes proved to Hollywood that Scorsese could handle big-budget productions, and he has become one of America's most critically acclaimed filmmakers.
