Caleb witnesses men drowning Will Hawkins in his bath tub, the same men that are staying at Miss Holt's boarding house. They are running a protection racket on the local store owners. People start to feel that Lucas is losing his grip on the town. Merlyn helps Caleb when the men come after him for taking the money from their room. Lucas takes care of the men one at a time, the first he gets drunk and wakes up buries alive with Will Hawkins, a second disappears after attacking Gail, and the last two die in an explosion while fleeing town.

Merlyn wants to come back and have a life and borrows the lifeforce of Gail's friends unborn child. She becomes a guest at the bording house and spends time with Caleb. She becomes friends with Ray a guy who stood up to Lucas and starts spending more time with him. When there are problems with the unborn child she must kill herself to let the baby live despite Lucas's attempts to stop her.

Mel Kirby from a local talk radio show Mel & Gloria asks Lucas for help with his career. When Lucas turns him down Mel goes after Ben broadcasting an armed seige involving him. Lucas makes Mel an offer of a job in TV but the deal does not include his wife Gloria who Lucas encourages him to get rid of. While rowing on the lake Gloria falls overboard and Mel leaves her to drown. Selena helps get Mel to confess. Gloria is still alive after heeding a warning from Lucas. Miss Holt helps Caleb to give up Merlyn holding a farewell ceremony putting Merlyn in danger.

Lucas gets dirt on the towns folk from the local priest, Father Tilden. Merlyn asks him to look after Caleb and helps him stand up to Lucas. Merlyn plans to exact revenge on Lucas and Lucas is scared for the first time, but Merlyn relises if she kills Lucas his spirit will take over Caleb. Lucas takes revenge on a lawyer who successfully sued the department. He tells him a developer wants his families land, but to sell he has to break his work to a family friend. In the end he gets $600,000 less than his house is worth, the exact same figure he won from the department.

1.11 Potato Boy [ 106 ]
Caleb hears singing during the night and is told by his friends it is the potato boy, a deformed child who lives in the house down the street. Merlyn feels sorry for him and helps him to die. Selena agrees to help Caleb with his failing grades. Ben goes into therapy and tells his doctor about Lucas killing Merlyn, so Lucas blackmails him to keep quiet. Caleb is drawn closer to Lucas and seeks the help of Rev Coombs, Selena's father.
